New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan accused committed walker Adam Gilchrist of being "righteous" in the fiery exchange which overshadowed Australia's thumping first Test win at the Gabba.

Tempers flared between the pair when McMillan was given not out after edging a catch behind to Gilchrist in NZ's second-innings collapse on Sunday.

Stump microphones picked up McMillan angrily reacting to the wicketkeeper's sledging after the nuggetty right-hander stood his ground.

"Not everyone is (expletive) walking Gilly. Not everyone has to walk mate," he said during the on-field dispute.

Next ball McMillan fell LBW to Jason Gillespie.

After Australia wrapped up an innings and 156-run victory, the pair discussed the incident inside the Gabba boundary rope and appeared to agree to disagree.

"I just thought you were being a little bit righteous," McMillan told Gilchrist in the second exchange.

The Australian vice-captain told the Black Caps batsman he had no complaint with his standing his ground.

"But if you nick it you (have to) expect to cop it," Gilchrist said.

After the Test, Gilchrist - a serial walker for the past 20 months - was accused by NZ skipper Stephen Fleming of pressuring opponents into walking through his "crusade".
