Lonard, Monty on top at the Heineken
By Mike Hedge 04/02/2005 07:39:46 PM

Peter Lonard hit only one good shot among the 68 he played in Friday's second round of the Heineken Classic at Royal Melbourne, but it was enough to keep him on top of the leaderboard.

The in-form golfer of the Australian summer is nine-under par on 133 after 36 holes.

"I hit one decent shot all day," Lonard said.

"The rest wasn't great, but I suppose I still hit a lot of greens."

Sharing the lead with Lonard is Scotland's Colin Montgomerie who followed a first round 65 with a 68.

A shot away is possibly the bravest golfer in the tournament, Jarrod Lyle, a 23-year-old from Shepparton in central Victoria who a few years ago couldn't even walk nine holes, let alone play golf.

Lyle spent nine months in a hospital bed after being diagnosed with leukaemia when he was 17.

But he beat the disease and got to eight under and looks capable of beating the best golf field assembled in Australia this summer.

"Nothing is as frightening as what I've been through," Lyle said.

"Certainly not being in the hunt in a golf tournament."
