Rugby World Cup winner in Games squad
01/03/2006 06:11:53 AM

World Cup winner Dan Luger has been included in a 15-man England rugby sevens squad for next month's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Also in the squad released by the Rugby Football Union were centres Henry Paul and Mathew Tait, both seemingly out of Andy Robinson's thoughts for the senior England team, and wing Tom Varndell, who scored a try on his senior debut last November but has failed to gain selection for the Six Nations.

Experienced sevens players Magnus Lund and Ben Gollings are also included alongside captain Simon Amor, the former IRB sevens player of the year.

"I truly believe that this squad includes some of the future stars of England rugby and this experience will be a vital part of their player development," said England sevens coach Mike Friday, who will trim the squad to 12 for the tournament which begins on March 16.

Luger, 31, won the last of his 38 caps in the 2003 World Cup quarter-final victory over Wales having been a regular fixture on the wing, scoring 24 tries. He also toured Australia with the 2001 British and Irish Lions.

"I really enjoy playing sevens and pulling on the England shirt again for the first time since the Rugby World Cup felt fantastic," said Luger.

He is currently without a club having been released from Perpignan last June.
