Australia's Matthew Hayden will be out to make up for lost time and a missed chance at a hundred in Bangalore two years ago in Wednesday's tri-series day-night cricket match against India.

Hayden will return to the side with opening partner Adam Gilchrist as Australia chases a good hit-out ahead of Tuesday's final in Calcutta, and will also be keen to post a big score after a lean series so far.

He made just 107 runs in his first four matches before sitting out Australia's 44-run win over New Zealand in Guwahati on Sunday.

But Hayden also has the chance to erase some bad memories at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after he was out for 99 in 2001, when India made 315 - its highest one-day score against Australia - to win by 60 runs.

India, which has won all three matches between the two sides in Bangalore, could also be bolstered by the return of captain Sourav Ganguly, opener Virender Sehwag, legspinner Anil Kumble and fast bowler Ashish Nehra.

Ganguly and Nehra are yet to play a match this series, while Sehwag and Kumble missed Thursday's loss to New Zealand in Cuttack, which has left the host nation in danger of missing the finals.

A loss to Australia would mean India would have to beat the Black Caps in Hyderabad in Saturday's final pool match to guarantee itself a berth at Eden Gardens.

Both sides will finalise their teams on Wednesday.
