Trinidad cricket officials have asked for a rapid police investigation into the theft of the Australian team's equipment to end a "terrible embarrassment".

Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president Alloy Lequay said he hand-delivered letters to transport minister Franklyn Khan, police commissioner Hilton Guy and the management of the Caribbean's BWIA airline on Monday night.

"I told them that the incident has caused the country and the region a terrible embarrassment, and they must act quickly to bring the culprits to justice," he said.

The Australian team has since departed the Caribbean, but its cricket board reported some players' bags were tampered with after being checked at the BWIA counter of Trinidad's airport on May 26.

Up to 35 items went missing as the team was flying to Grenada.

Bats, pads, shoes, sunglasses and other personal items disappeared, officials said, and some bags went missing altogether.

Australian cricketers also said smaller items went missing at the airport during another flight last month.

Lequay said it wasn't the first time such a theft had occurred at Piarco International Airport.

Trinidad's police and BWIA officials say they are investigating the missing equipment, reportedly worth up to $A15,000.

"It is highly unlikely the bags were tampered with in the luggage holding area, because it is a very secure area," airline spokesman Clint Williams said.
