Angry Cronulla coach Chris Anderson claimed the National Rugby League referees weren't doing enough to protect the game's star players after his captain Brett Kimmorley suffered a broken jaw.

Kimmorley faces at least a month on the sideline after x-rays at Kareena Private Hospital revealed he had played more than 50 minutes of his side's 28-26 win over Wests Tigers at Toyota Park with the injury.

Sharks general manager Steve Rogers said the club would investigate video of the incident before deciding whether to take further action.

"We'll be looking at it very closely, as I know the NRL will," Rogers said.

The NRL is also certain to take a close look at Anderson's comments after the national coach took aim at referee Rod Lawrence and the standards in general, claiming it had become impossible to play entertaining football.

Anderson could face a $10,000 fine if he is found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

"The 10 metres is disgraceful," Anderson said.

"There was no 10 metres all night. Bill (Harrigan) showed them the other night. He produced a great game in the State of Origin because he kept them apart.

"It's not that hard to do. If you keep the teams apart you get good football.

"Noddy (Kimmorley) is in there carrying a jaw that could be broken because we couldn't play good footy.

"You have taken a great athlete out of the game.

"It's disgraceful. That's not what footy is about. The great players are being belted out of the game.

"The referees have to adjudicate on that sort of stuff and if they don't that's what's going to happen.

"The 10 metres was an absolute disgrace.

"There wasn't a penalty for the 10 metres until the 60th minute. Someone has to speak up about it, whether you get penalised or not."
