Abusive NRL fan banned for five years
09/07/2008 05:03:02 PM

A spectator will be banned from all rugby league matches for five years for racially abusing Penrith captain Petero Civoniceva, the NRL has announced.

The man racially taunted Civoniceva by calling the big Fijian-born prop a "monkey" during Penrith's 22-16 win over the Eels at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday.

After viewing footage of the crowd and several witness statements, Eels officials on Tuesday passed on the details of two "persons of interest" to NSW Police.

The NRL said that any person breaching such a ban was liable for prosecution and further lifetime bans from all matches.

"The simple message is that we won't tolerate racial abuse against our players," said NRL chief executive David Gallop.

"With the assistance of the NSW Police we have a strong system in place to ensure that trouble makers can be removed and it is one that works in the interest of all fans and players.

"I commend both the Parramatta club and the NSW Police for their assistance in this matter."
