Horwill out of Wallabies' European tour 03/10/2008 04:16:15 PM
Test lock James Horwill was on Friday ruled out of the Wallabies spring tour to Europe due to a foot injury which requires surgery. Horwill is facing six months on the sidelines after an operation to repair a ligament tear - a major blow for Australian coach Robbie Deans as well as the Queensland Reds. The Reds skipper isn't expected to return to action until midway through the 2009 Super 14 competition. In a testament to his toughness, Horwill has played with the injury since Australia's 16-9 win over South Africa in Perth in July. He was one of only four Wallabies to start in all nine Tests this year and was the team's equal leading try-scorer with four. The man with most to gain from Horwill's absence on the six-match tour of Hong Kong and Europe departing this month is Brumbies second-rower Mark Chisholm. "It's disappointing news, but playing on wasn't an option," Deans said of Horwill's injury. "The injury had been given plenty of opportunity to settle but hasn't. "While we've managed James through the back half of the (season), the improvement to the ligament that was expected hasn't materialised."
