Victorious return for women's rugby team
By Samantha Broun 09/03/2009 11:33:54 AM

Australia's rugby sevens hero Shelly Mitcham says she's still buzzing after her dramatic match-winning try in Dubai.

Mitcham was the hero of Australia's 15-10 extra-time win over New Zealand in the inaugural women's rugby sevens World Cup on Sunday, and arrived to a hero's welcome in Sydney on Monday with her victorious teammates.

The team stepped off the plane with their gold medals around their necks and proudly showed off the World Cup to their touch football mates and fans.

Mitcham was the main attraction after she shook off two defenders to score the matchwinner in sudden-death extra-time and secure the trophy in front of a crowd of 34,000.

"It's the start of something big I think," Mitcham said.

"We've set a platform now and there's the possibility of the Olympics coming up.

"It's an exciting time to be involved with the rugby sevens."

The success of the women's tournament has strengthened the argument for the inclusion of rugby sevens at the 2016 Olympics.

With two places for new sports open, sevens is up against baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, softball and squash in its bid to feature at the Games.
