No mercy for weary Test stars: Hookes
By Tom Wald 17/12/2003 07:20:42 PM

Victorian coach David Hookes has no sympathy for the weary trio of Western Australian Test players backing up for Thursday night's ING Cup cricket match at the WACA Ground.

Adam Gilchrist, Damien Martyn and Justin Langer will all turn out for WA despite coming off an energy-sapping Test loss to India in hot conditions in Adelaide this week.

Gilchrist said he was committed to playing for WA but there was a hint of discontentment about making his only appearance in the domestic competition this summer.

"It is a busy time, if we are there we will be fully committed to play, but it is a fairly hectic stage, and maybe it might be beneficial for a few blokes to have a spell, but that is not the way everyone sees it," he said at Perth Airport.

The trio will be rested for the Pura Cup match against the Bushrangers starting on Saturday ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne against India.

Hookes said he would be disappointed if any of the international players wanted to shirk state duties.

"I have no sympathy for them, it is a one-day game of cricket it is only going to last six hours," he said

"I'd be really disappointed if any of those players did not want to play, injured that is different, I have no qualms at all, and even Gilly you could mount an argument.

"But they are not playing until the 26th of December and it is a one-day game of cricket.

"They are fit, they are strong and they earn $3 million a year to play cricket. That is their responsibility."
