Can we fix the problems for the PURA CUP???

After helping secure outright victory over WA two weeks ago, scoring an unbeaten hundred as the two teams put on over 500 runs on the last day, including a 400 run cahse by the SpeedBlitz Blues, and scoring yet another hundred this week in Tasmania as NSW went down to Tassie, Steve Waugh has openly asked why the crowds aren't turning up to watch the best (domestic) cricket competition in the world.

Steve Waugh went out on his own in the post match press conference, asking why people are staying away from the Pura Cup- Steve is quoted today in "The Daily Telegraph" saying "Possibly the answer is you've got to let people in for nothing to watch domestic cricket".

I'm not sure about you but the deciding factor on whether I go to the cricket or not- is not going to be the $6 entry fee.

I'd like to see the Fanatics take up this challenge- I think they could help turn this around. Why not show your support when NSW Speedblitz Blues take on the Tassie tigers at the SCG on Dec 19-22. See the Australian backbone of the recent past and future- watch all the names play- Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Michael Slater, Michael Bevan, Michael Clarke, Simon Katich, Matthew Nicholson, Brad Haddin, Glenn McGrath (if back from injury), Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill- all these players are on show for $6- and the game is likely to be better than most of the test matches with two fairly even teams actually fighting to win the match!!

So grab the zinc cream and the old blue singlet- grab some of the boys, grab a few bucks, make your way to the SCG and watch a great game of cricket with your mates and find the "spirit of cricket" on the field and in the bar.

All the best to all the State teams out there for a great season- and back the Blues for the double again this year.

What do you think? Would you support the Blues if it was free?

  • Sounds like you work for NSW Cricket mate. I agree with you but I think the point he was trying to make was if 5k are going to turn up to watch a Test match then maybe NSW needs to look at different options for the Pura?

  • Steve spoke to the press about this again in Adelaide - clarifying that his point was not to allow people in for free but to organise school groups to help with the profile of cricket and of course the crowds. Without more backing from broadcasters, and a

  • It has been the years of neglect of proper promotion of state based cricket that has led to the demise of support for the game at state level. As steve says bring the kids to the cricket, they are the future.

  • It's a shame that we get a decent crowd for the Test Matches (pity about this last one in Adelaide, which had a poor turnout due to the heat) and yet the Pura Cup matches are played in empty stadia. If the Pura Cup teams are the nursery for the future Te

  • Continuing on from my previous comments, if the Pura Cup matches are the nursery for the future Test side and there are some decent players who provide a contest in these sides, then let's support them, because they are the future of Australian cricket.

  • Hi all What about this outpost called Adelaide. Everyone seems to forget about us in S.A. We are part of this great country you know!!!!!!!!!!! My wife would be there all the time.As would I. We have gone and there was hardly anyone there.

  • Seems the Tassie match mentioned above ended in a draw with both teams on even runs. Can't get much closer than that to an NSW victory.

  • Lets see the Australian players take some responsibility for this and show some pride and commitment in their state caps. How many runs has Mark Waugh scored for NSW recently and how committed is he. Michael Clarke is being considered for Australian sel

  • Continuing on "ection, but is averaging on 38 at first class level. Why go and watch the matches if a higher level of performance is not expected. These are the issues that need to be addressed.

  • And following on again, Bevan is clearly the outstanding first class batsmen, yet is not discussed as a test prospect, why ? Why watch Bevan make a 200 at the SCG against Tasmanina if it does not lead to higher honours.

  • I agree with some of the comments on the pura cup. I recently went to nsw v tas and tas scored 280 in a day which is pretty slow. There are a lot of great players around and they need to and deserve to play on the top grounds, but the crowd needs to supor
