Sonny Bill Williams - The Wounded Lover

Sonny Bill Williams has traditionally been one of the most humble players in the NRL despite his freakish talents. For most of his career he has sworn by loyalty to the Bulldogs, openly believing there is more important things than just money. Earlier this year he went on to The Footy Show to publicly vilify what the games show pony, Willie Mason, had done in joining the Roosters.

So what's with the sudden change in attitude? Sonny Bill is feeling the effects of a broken heart.

While Mason was at the dogs he also swore by loyalty, a trait which Sonny chose to follow. Now he has been betrayed by the one he once loved. At first he lashed out in anger against Mason but now he has moved to the next stage of grievingâ?¦ depression. As an attempt to try and get back onside with Mason, Sonny is looking to dog the dogs in the same, if not worse, manner as his former partner.

Suddenly loyalty is not important because it's all about the money, but being the highest paid Doggies player isn't enough! Most 22 year olds would be more than happy earning a quarter of what he earns.

We recently heard that Mason would love to one day captain the Roosters and days later Sonny decided he wants to captain the dogs (oh and apparently it was always Anasta's dream to captain the Roosters I suppose he forgot that when he got his Bulldogs Premiers 2004 tattoo).

As good as Sonny is he does not deserve the captaincy. Yes, he would be better than Andrew Ryan who lacks direction and the vocal ability to lead his players but Luke Patten is the most deserving for the position and most committed to the club. The captain needs to be dedicated to the team. Not even $400,000 a year is enough for Sonny to do his job two days in a row and back up after the test just like every other player.

There is no doubting he is far and away the doggies best, even when he doesnâ??t want to be there, and potentially could become the best the game has ever seen but for now he needs to be put in his place. Sadly there's no one to do it.

For large portions of the 2005 and 2006 seasons he was receiving big money for sitting on the side line injured. The club showed loyalty to their rising star signing him to a five year deal at his request despite the risk of long term injury, but he isn't willing to return the favour unless he gets more money.

The dogs can't expect help from David Gallop to keep the super star in the game and away from rival codes. That service is only available to the likes of the games legendary druggo, sorry I mean Joey, Johns.

The Doggies season is as close to gone as its going to get this early in the year so lets just hope this weeping soul can mend his heart and get back to what he does best. If not, here's hoping the dogs never let him go and shove him in the NSW Cup for the next four years if need be.

Sonny, you are not bigger than the game. Players come and go but the teams and the game are forever!

  • These players just dont have any pride in the jersey anymore, its all about the hip pocket. It will be interesting to see how the dogs board handles this.

Why cant the supporters have a chance to voice their opinion and make the club make a stance and not release him?

  • I agree Anne, most players just dont respect the game anymore.

Since signing with this new, un-acredited, manager Sonny's attitude has change. I find it a bit of a coincidence then that getting players overseas is the only way his new manager can get money and become a credited.
Some might say Sonny is being taken for a ride, but he obviously can;t see this.
