I Wish Australia Lost!

Before you begin attacking me for what is probably quite an un-Australian statement, especially when talking about sport, just hear me out for why I think Australia should have lost a game in the Rugby League World Cup.

There is no denying that us Aussie’s love seeing our sporting teams win. It’s the reason we have only recently started ‘loving’ soccer, it’s the reason we love international rugby while barely acknowledging the local game exists and I have to assume it’s the only reason so many people could possibly love cricket. But my love for Rugby League had me hoping for an Australian loss at the RLWC.

We’ve played two games in the group stages of the tournament for two easy wins. Awesome right? Well not really. The big three nations have been put in the same group to prevent blow out scores. It’s not working!

The Kangaroos smashed the second best team in the world, the Kiwis 30-6, and followed this up with an even bigger thrashing of the third best team, beating the Poms 52-4. Last time I checked scores like this were classed as blow-outs.

Now of course I still want the Aussies to make the final in Brisbane and win it – perhaps partially because it would make my trip up there a bit of a waste if they didn’t. But how good would it have been if we were beaten by the Kiwis and got the chance for revenge on the biggest stage of all?

The only thing we can hope for now is that the Kiwis have a huge turn in form and play three awesome games on the way to a rematch against the Kangaroos in the final. Maybe this can kick some excitement into the Cup and make an actual ‘competition’ out of it.

I’m disregarding all the other teams to make the final because I’m a realist.

Go the Aussies… and the Kiwis a little bit too. Or does this make me completely un-Australian?
