Gallipoli should be on everyone's bucket list
I have to admit I was really apprehensive about visiting Gallipoli on ANZAC Day. In my family it is one of the most important days of the year and I was nervous that sharing that moment at dawn with thousands of strangers would feel impersonal.I was also worried that by going with a tour group that provide matching hoodies and beanies that it would trivialise what is a really important day. I have no trouble admitting when I’m wrong, and this time, I was.
Fanatics was fantastic; notorious for the bright yellow beanies and hoodies, for getting to the Cove early (2pm the day before – the gates don’t even open until 6pm) and dominating the whole front grass patch with its huge group. They were organised, respectful and truly committed to making the day special for all of us.
Everyone, is there for the same reason, and as we all rugged up in our sleeping bags we chatted to those around us who we had never met, sharing personal anecdotes about our grandparents in the war, giving a bit of friendly shtick to the Kiwis among us and having a laugh about things we have seen, done or heard on our travels so far.
ANZAC Day at Gallipoli was one of the most truly special moments of my life. It’s hard to describe how truly special it is and I know I cannot do it justice but if I leave you with anything let it be this; add Gallipoli to the list of things you should do before you die.
