    Ryobi Cup - Weekend 13

    Qld Bulls 8/282: Burns 48 (59 b 3 4s 1 6s), Lynn 98 (100 b 6 4s 4 6s) (3rd: 91 in 19.4 overs), Reardon 67 (68 b 7 4s 1 6s) (4th: 83 in 11.3 overs), Gale 22* (19 b 2 4s), Boyce 11* (6 b 2 4s) (9th: 26* in 2 overs), Butterworth 0/27 (6-1), Bird 2/20 (7-2), Krejza 2/50 (10), Johnston 0/35 (7)
    lost to Tas Tigers 3/283 (47.2 overs): Wells 121* (145 b 10 4s), Cowan 125 (107 b 13 4s 2 6s) (2nd: 223 in 35.2 overs), G.Bailey 22 (21 b 4 4s) (3rd: 34 in 5.2 overs), A.McDermott 1/26 (8-2), Boyce 1/75 (12.2)
Bellerive: Bulls slumped to 2/16, before Burns, Lynn & Reardon built up a big score. Butterworth & Bird were frugal early, but only got 1 over at the end, Krejza was expensive early but then got wkts, Faulkner & Laughlin suffered.

Flexed off at 5 pm, expecting to see the last 10 overs - but two breakdowns on the Tasman Bridge got me in a traffic jam, went rallying thru the Domain - but don't think I gained much time. Arrived at 7/244 (Reardon 56, Gale 7, 47 overs - just 3 to go). Faulkner to Gale, Reardon pulled sq, then pulled high over midwkt onto the Hill, but run out off the last ball (threw bat - because he was injured?) - 8/256, 12 off over. Butters on at Southern End for just his 6th over (why hadn't he had more overs?), Gale pulled over midwkt fielder, with a couple of 3s - 12 off over. Faulkner still on (what is wrong with Bird?), Gale hoicked to fine leg, Boyce lapped to fine leg, then stepped away & late cut - 13 off over. Bulls 8/282 (Gale 22, Boyce 11), Faulkner 1/87 (off 11). Tassie need 226 (in 41 overs) to avoid a bonus pt and secure a Finals spot, but the largest ever domestic one-dayer chase (at Bellerive) would give them a chance of hosting the Final. Saveloy & Coke: $7. Lights on in reasonable twilight.

McDermott to Wells - mdn. Gale to Cosgrove. Cosgrove (1) hit on pads by McDermott - 1/5 - just 2 runs. Cowan back cut Gale. McDermott to Wells - mdn. Cowan sq cut Gale's last ball. Wells snicked Gale to keeper - between him & slip - dropped. Wells cover drove McDermott - 9 off over. Capt Hopes replaced Gale (Southern) - just 3. Powerplay 1: 1/35 - slow, but steady. Cutting replaced McDermott (Members), Cowan sq cut - 8 off over. Wells pulled Hopes sq, 50 in 12th over, then back cut - 11 off over. Cutting front foot noballed, Wells pulled thru midon - 10 off over. Leggie Boyce replaced Hopes (Southern), Wells pulled behind sq - 6 off over. Hopes replaced Cutting (Members) - just 2. Wells beaten by Boyce, but Dunk couldn't collect it. Boyce - just 2. Drinks 1/83 (Wells 45, Cowan 35, 18 overs).
Wells 50 (71 b 5 4s). Cutting replaced Boyce (Southern), Wells sq cut, 100 up in 22nd over, Cutting fielded Cowan drive with his in-step (Lee-like) - 7 off over. McDermott replaced Hopes (Members), 100 partnership - just 3 off over. Cutting - just 3. Cowan takes single off Cutting for his 50 (65 b 3 4s) - just 2 off over. After 26 overs, it is 1/116 (Wells 61, Cowan 50) - but for me, its ten pin bowling night!
Wells & Cowan went on for the 3rd best wkt partnership for the Tigers, Bailey hit out, and the Tigers won easily with 16 balls to spare - only McDermott kept them honest. Tigers into the Final.

    SA Redbacks 7/277: Klinger 112 (131 b 5 4s 2 6s), Ferguson 48 (2nd: 105 in 22 overs), Cooper 36 (33 b 3 4s 1 6s) (3rd: 62 in 10 overs), Doropoulos 50 (35 b 4 4s 2 6s) (4th: 61 in 8.4 overs), Fekete 2/42 (9), Rose 0/53 (12-1), A.McDonald 0/27 (5), Sheridan 0/43 (8-1), White 3/55 (9)
    beat Vic Bushrangers 229 (44.2 overs): Finch 63 (62 b 7 4s 1 6s), Quiney 24 (28 b 2 4s) (1st: 68 in 10.2 overs), A.McDonald 43 (36 b 5 4s 1 6s), Handscomb 28, Rose 23 (22 b 2 4s), Boland 19 (9th: 40 in 6.5 overs), Putland 2/63 (12), Lyon 1/68 (13), O'Brien 1/56 (12-2), Haberfield 3/36 (7.2 -1)
MCG: Bushies started with 3 debutants (opening the bowling with two of them!) and two 2nd gamers - but Klinger, Ferguson, Cooper & Doropoulos fed on the experienced bowlers to set a large total - White got an expensive 3 wkts; Finch & Quiney got the chase going, but only McDonald kept the rate going, a middle order collapse of 5/42 and Fekete unable to bat with an injured foot saw the Redbacks home - Haberfield getting 3 wkts. Redbacks host the Final.

MCG: Vics slumped to 7/118, before McDonald & Siddle resurrected the innings - 5 wkt haul to Mennie; SA collapsed to McDonald & Siddle; Vics slumped to 9/104 before Holland took the long handle (supported by keeper Carters) - Sayers getting his maiden 5 wkt haul - SA had to chase 302 and it still wasn't the end of the 2nd day!; SA lost 3 quick wkts before stumps and the cause looked lost, but Ferguson & Cooper led the charge, with Head getting his maiden 50, but Siddle scything thru the rest - 34 runs short, so Holland's hitting was the difference.

Lyon replaced Haber (Scoreboard), Bailey advanced & pulled thru midwkt, Punter hit to longon (Cooper) coming in - dropped! Bailey pulled sq - fielder hit boundary with ball - 12 off over. Redbacks have dropped both bats - going to cost them the match? 250 in 46th over, O'Brien - just 3. Punter pulled Lyon over midwkt into Members, Lyon doing stretching exercises (cramping up?) - 12 off over, end of spell 3/86 (13). Putland replaced O'Brien (Bradman) round wkt to Bailey - 8 off over. 16 needed off 2 overs: O'Brien on at Scoreboard End, Bailey pulled sq into Members, Bailey reverse swept for 2, then again for his 100 - 11 off over. 5 needed off last over: Putland round wkt to Punter - single, Bailey ran a run (by field umpire) - but 3rd umpire reviewed it - leg before 101 - 4/282. 4 runs from 4 balls: Faulkner french cut over keeper for 2 (should Punter have taken the 2nd?), field coming in, Crosthwaite standing up, Faulks swung & missed - just stopped by Cros; Faulks drove to midwkt - run outs at either end unsuccessful, but no run. 2 runs needed from last ball: a tie will give Cup to Redbacks (as finished top), Punter took his pads off (to boos) - could only run a single bye. Tie. Tigers 4/285 (Ponting 75, Faulkner 2), Putland 1/65 (13), Lyon 3/86 (13). Redbacks won Ryobi Cup, as they finished on top of ladder - a wkt, just 3 runs and a bye off the last over - Tigers unable to score enough runs from the last over.

Man of match: George Bailey, for 101 - and the wkt that won the match!
Crowd: 10 245, with free entry.

When is a tie, not a tie? When the team is on top of the ladder! But Shield Final goes to top team if it is a draw.
At least there wren't any fireworks! (could you use them in 35C heat?). But over the bridge, they had a Symphony Orchestra in the Park (South Australians arrogantly assuming they would win?). Got to North Tce, and then the fireworks started! (but the crowd had already left!). Did they fly all the way to Tasmania - to start Sunday's bushfires?

Another early morning start (6:45 am) and another Qantas breakfast. 3.5 hrs in Melbourne, before Jetstar to Hobart. 50 min delay because the captain's seatbelt was broken! Qantas baggage belt breakdown was slowing checkins for Qantas. Back in Hobart, 55 mins late, in time to watch TV coverage of the ODI. 1 day, 9 hrs parking at Hobart Airport: $30.

                Sheffield Shield - Round 10

Three matches, all with a bearing on who would play the Final, and all over in 3 days!

                WA 142: S.Marsh 34, Voges 49 (3rd: 52), Coulter-Nile 26 (7th: 45), Butterworth 1/28 (15-7), Bird 5/32 (19-10), Faulkner 2/35 (13-3)
                and 241: S.Marsh 35, Birt 21, Ronchi 71, Rimmington 28 (5th: 86), Coulter-Nile 20, Beer 20, Bird 6/63 (22 - 6, including a hat-trick), Butterworth 0/47 (16-7), Krejza 0/50 (20-4), Faulkner 4/50 (19.2 -8)
                lost to Tas 363: Cazzulino 18, Cowan 143 (1st: 59), Ponting 111 (3rd: 205), Krejza 36, Hogan 2/82, Rimmington 1/61 (22-5), Coulter-Nile 2/85 (29-8), Behrendorff 4/85, Beer 1/47 (17.2 -2)
                and 2/21: Cowan 12
Bellerive: Some Tigers missing due to food poisoning, WA were 2/20, then relied on Shaun Marsh & capt Voges before collapsing to 6/77, with some late hitting from Coulter-Nile - Bird had another 5 wkt haul, Ponting had gon e for an X-Ray on his thumb and Voges had hurt his back. Tassie thru to 1/73. I arrived with 12 overs to og, but they went off for bad light (with light towers on) with 7 left.
Australian Cricket Society: Umpires Forum - with the two officiating and their 'boss. They prefer the 3rd umpire reviewing decisions (Ryobi & Big Bash this year) - but it is at director's mercy what replays they see - and at end of over (or innings) they don't see a replay until back from commercials, i.e. too late. Review system requires them to hit a button 4 times (to confirm actually out) - don't do so with a pen in your hand - it might hit the wrong button ('technical malfunction'). Why do they come off for bad light (with red ball) with light towers going (artifical light taking over)? Shadow of the red ball can't be distinguished from the ball itself - so it looks elongated - whereas can tell difference between shadow & white ball.

2nd day: Cowan & Ponting put on 205, but a collapse of 5/23 gave hope to WA, only Krejza did much scoring - Behrendorff took 4. Got there for the last 10 overs - Davis bowled (WA: 1/33).
Cricket Tasmania - Meet the Players: presentation by coach Coyle to (ex-Tiger) now WA bowling coach Griffith (and story of their association from Launceston days), then Ponting & Triffitt interviewed - Ponting will not consider any more ODIs.

3rd day: Overcast, but fine day - could WA make Tassie bat again? Got there just before midday, just missing Marsh's dismissal (snicked his Test career away?) - 3/91(Birt 17, Ronchi 4, 34 overs). Butterworth to Birt, Ronchi sq cut, then off drove - bringing up 100 in 35th over - 9 off over. Bird to Birt, Ronchi cover drove - 5 off over. Butters to Birt - mdn. Birt (21) lifted to extracover - 4/110, Ronchi leg glanced. Rimmington flicked Butters thur midwkt, then steered to 3rd man - 11 off over. Bird - just 1. Krejza replaced Butters (Southern End) for last over before lunch - just 2. Lunch 4/131 (Ronchi 26, Rimmington 13, 43 overs). Saveloy & Coke: $7.

Laughlin finally on (Members) for 44th over, bounced Ronchi - back of bat to fine leg, then sq cut - 8 off over. Faulkner (Southern End) to Rimmington - mdn. Laughlin to Ronchi - mdn. Faulks - just 1. Laughlin to Rimmer - mdn. Ronchi back cut Faulks over gully - 7 off over. Laughlin to Ronchi - another mdn. Ronchi offdrove Laughlin for the 150 in 52nd over. Krejza replaced Faulks (Southern), Ronchi straight drove - 50 partnership. Rimmer pulled Laughlin, Ronchi 50 (71 b 10 4s) - 5 off over. Butters on for Laughlin (Members) - mdn to Rimmer. Butters - just 1. Butters to Ronchi - mdn. Krejza - just 2. Drinks 4/181 (Ronchi 60, Rimmington 27, 61 overs).
Ronchi cover drove Butters, then pulled thru midwkt - 10 off over. Krejza - just 1. Bird replaced Butters (Members), Rimmer (28) edged onto stumps - 5/192 - (last ball) wkt mdn. Krejza - just 1. Bird hit Ronchi (71) on pads - 6/193 - 5 wkt haul, 10 wkts for match - on a hat trick; Behrendorff (0) hit on pads first ball - 7/193 - hat-trick!! (3rd for Tassie - after Peter Clough & Shane Jurgensen). Laughlin on for Krejza (Southern) - just 2. Bird - just 2, 200 up in 68th over. Bird to Beer - mdn. Faulks on for Laughlin (Southern), Coulter-Nile pulled sq onto Hill, then coverdrove - 10 off over. Bird to Beer -mdn. Faulks - just 1. Krejza on for Bird (Members) - just 1. Tea 7/216 (Coulter-Nile 16, Beer 7). Chicken Kebab & Coke: $7 (but not SACA Plum Chicken!)

Faulks to Coulter - just 2. Krejza to Beer - mdn. Coulter pulled Faulks fine - Tassie would have to bat! then (20) snicked to gully - 8/222, Voges came out with his bad back (why?) - 9 off over. Krejza - just 1. Faulks took new ball, Beer sq cut (to me). Bird replaced Krejza (Members) - just 2. Beer (20) snicked Faulks fine to keeper - 9/239 - wkt mdn. Hogan (1) onhit Faulks to midon - all out 241 (Voges 6, 84.2 overs) - Tassie need 21 to win.

Hogan to Cazzulino - just 1. Rimmington to Cazzu - mdn. Hogan - 5 off. Cowan straight drove Rimmer - 5 off. Cazzu (5) snicked Rimmer to slip - 1/17. Cowan (12) mis-pulled Hogan off back of bat to 3rd slip - 2/19, Wells (Punter resting his thumb?) pushed thru midwkt for the win. Tassie 2/21 (Kruger 0, Wells 2, 6.5 overs) - Tassie by 8 wkts and into the Final. But my two days of weekend cricket has become less than a day!

                SA 162: Cooper 21, Putland 31*, George 22 (10th: 55), R.Harris 3/29 (18.3 -6), Magoffin 2/33 (15-3), A.McDermott 2/41 (14-5), Hopes 3/28 (18-8), Boyce 0/17 (6-2)
                and 103: Stray 15, Cooper 49, R.Harris 2/20 (19-11), Magoffin 2/27 (16-5), Hopes 2/9 (12-7), A.McDermott 4/35 (12.4 -2), Boyce 0/8 (4)
                beaten by (an innings) Qld 356: Kemp 47, Burns 130 (3rd: 119), Hartley 68 (6th: 120), Magoffin 46* (44 b 3 4s 1 6s), A.McDermott 22 (10th: 54), Putland 6/72 (30-9), George 2/98, Richardson 0/63 (23-5), D.Harris 0/5 (3-1)
Gabba: SA collapsed to 9/107, with last pair Putland & George getting them to 162 - wkts shared amongst the Qld pacers, Qld lost 2 wkts by stumps; Burns led the way with partnerships with Kemp & Hartley, Magoffin & McDermott hitting out at the end - 6 wkts to Putland, but Klinger was gone before stumps; the SA collapse continued - just Cooper offereing resistance - wkts shared amongst the Qld pacers again - McDermott with 4. Qld got the Final.

                NSW (1st innings) 208: Maddinson 19, Hughes 22 (1st: 40), Khawaja 20, S.Smith 86, Rohrer 15 (4th: 59), O'Keefe 26*, Siddle 1/35 (18.4 -6), Herrick 3/50 (18-4), A.McDonald 2/8 (14-9), Maxwell 0/10 (3), Sheridan 2/53, Holland 1/52 (17-2)
                and 212: Maddinson 51, Khawaja 33 (2nd: 59), Nevill 56*, Siddle 3/57, A.McDonald 4/42 (18.4 -6), Holland 1/10 (7-2)
                lost to Vic 185: Finch 29, White 39 (4th: 62), A.McDonald 23, Maxwell 26*, Copeland 2/38 (22-9), O'Keefe 0/8 (2), Tremain 3/61, Rohrer 4/13 (4.5)
                and 5/236: Rogers 70, Quiney 31 (1st: 60), Finch 17 (2nd: 42), Maxwell 43 (50 b 4 4s 2 6s) (4th: 45), A.McDonald 32*, Handscomb 36* (5th: 58*), O'Keefe 0/35 (12-3), Tremain 3/51, Rohrer 0/7 (3)
MCG: NSW struggled with only Steve Smith getting away - wkts amongst the Vic pacers - Herrick with 3, Vics lost Rogers before bad light; Vics struggled with White the best (that was unexpected) - youngster Tremain got 3 and part-timer Rohrer took 3 wkts in his 5th over to finish the innings (but no chance of a hat-trick); NSW had a slender lead, but after Maddinson & Khawaja - they were 6 down by stumps; Nevill gave them a chance with a 235 lead - more wkts to Andrew McDonald and Siddle, Vics put some got partnerships going - Rogers with Quiney & Maxwell, then McDonald & (now) keeper Handscomb completing the win - youngster Tremain took another 3.

Tasmania to play Queensland in Brisbane, Victoria finished third (equal on points). South Australia did their best to railroad the Tigers - first by (food) poisoning players, then by collapsing so easily to the Bulls.

                  Shield Final - FoxSports coverage

                  Off again .. on again.
Coverage of the Shield Final is back on FoxSports.
Apparently it was going to be bumped to just a webcast - for the NZ v SA 2nd Test? but as South Africa can't pass England on the Test table (after a washout of the 1st Test) - our local Final has taken precedence!

                    Shield Final - Day 2

Flew up the night before - overcast in Hobart, raining at Tullamarine (for the Grand Prix? Trickett finished 3rd in butterfly), no taxis at Brisbane Airport (for a time).
Few distractions Saturday morning - Thorpe had bombed out in the semis, Punter bombed out on the 1st day (missed his innings again!), Tendulkar had finally got his 100th ton (and Bangladesh had won!), George Bailey won man of match in his 1st ODI and Doherty had taken 4 wkts v Windies. Margaret Whitlam had died (at 92 - same age as Bradman) and George Clooney had been arrested.

Overcast, with forecast of rain. Got reciprocal rights, wearing my Tassie top (was it mistaken for St Patrick's Day garb?). Located in the Members behind the bowler's arm (near the Players area). Tassie resumed at 6/208 (a slow day's play?).
Harris to Butterworth - mdn. Triffitt (17) snicked Magoffin to slip Harris - 7/208 - wkt mdn. Magoffin to Butters - mdn. Butters pulled Harris sq. Butters slashed Magoffin over slips, then scooped (25) low to extra cover - 8/226. McDermott replaced Magoffin at Members. McDermott - just 1. Hopes replaced Harris (Stanley St End) - mdn to Krejza. Hopes to Drew - mdn. Drinks 8/237 (Krejza 5, Drew 8, 105 overs).
McDermott to Krejza - mdn. Drew pulled Hopes fine, then scooped just short of midoff. Krejza (5) snicked McDermott - to Harris again (can't take wkts, can take slip catches) - 9/241, then went thru Bird (0). Tasmania 241 (Drew 12, 107.5 overs) - but was it enough?, McDermott 6/54, Harris - wktless. Meat pie & 600ml Coke: $9.40 (limited selection of hot food - one item at a time! - reflection of the 'massive' crowd?).
Bird (from Stanley St end) to Townsend - mdn. Butterworth to Kemp, snicked (0) to keeper -1/0 - wkt mdn. Butters to Robinson - mdn. Townsend (5) snicked Butters to keepr - 2/5 - wkt mdn (another last ball of over wkt). Butters to Robinson - mdn. Burn outside edged Bird - just short of a diving gully. Bird - just 1. Lunch 2/9 (Robinson 3, Burns 1, 9 overs).

Doolan off with back spasms? Butters to Burns, pulled thru midwkt (first runs off Butters) - 6 off over. Bird - just 1. Bird - just 1. Burns back cut Butters - 5 off over. Drew replaced Bird (Stanley St), Burns sq drove for only 3, 5 wides well down legside - 8 off the licorice allsorts over. Faulkner replaced Butters (Members) - just 1. Burns sq drove Drew, then late cut - 10 off over. Faulks to Robinson - mdn. Burns pulled Faulks thru midwkt. Burns (28) snicked Faulks to keeper - 3/48 - wkt mdn. Bird replaced the expensive Drew (Stanley St, or because of a new batsman?) - mdn to Lynn. 150 up in 22nd over - just 2 off Faulks. Bird to Lynn - mdn. Robinson (16) just lifted Faulks to short stright midoff (Punter) - umpires conferred (possible bump ball?). Drinks 4/55 (Lynn 0, 24 overs) - another last ball of the over wkt.
Lynn (0) fended Bird to a diving Faulks at gully - 5/55 - wkt mdn. 241 looking a sizeable total! But Hopes & Hartley always seem to lead a recovery against us! Faulks - just 1. Hopes straight hit Bird - 7 off over. Hopes off drove Faulks, then on drove - 8 off over. Sky was darkening - rain getting closer? (radar picture not looking good). Butters replaced Faulks (Members) - just 2. Lights coming on, Krejza on for Bird (Stanley St) - just 1. Butters - just 2. Hartley snicked Krejza thru slips for 3, Hopes onhit, then pulled fine - 13 off over. Hartlery snicked Butters to slips, Kruger dived across from 2nd slip, but couldn't hold it (at 5/92, Hartley 6, where was Kruger from?) - just the 2. Broke out the poncho for a walk around the Gabba area, wandered back past the Gabba about an hr later - Krejza & Punter heading off to their hotel?

Ongoing showers for evening, so didn't bother going into the city. Travelling lite - so only had a poncho for 'protection'.

                      Shield Final - Day 3

Up 'early' for an 8am breakfast with ex-colleague. Who goes out to breakfast at 8 am on a Sunday? At least I am still 'on' Daylight time. They live in a block of flats near Story Bridge - and last year had no power for 2 days. Apparently, some of the Riverfront restaurants moved their fittings upstairs so they could continue trading, but left their wine cellars and produce 'downstairs' - a lot of expensive wine ended up in label-less bottles! Overcast, with predicted rain. Early start because of early finish yesterday - 9:30 am (local time) - back in Members area, behind bowler's arm.

Faulkner compelted over to Hartley. Butterworth to Hopes, Triffitt dropped him 1st ball. Bird replaced Faulks (Stanley St), Hopes (58) hit on pads - 6/144 (Hopes ot happy as he went into the changerooms!) - 50th wkt for Bird this debut season. Hartley coverdrove Butters, 150 in 48th over. Harris pulled Bird thru midwkt. Butters - just 1. Faulks back replacing Bird (Stanley St) - just 1. Harris snicked Butters thru slips - 5 off over. Krejza - just 2. Drew replaced Bird (to build on his 3 expensive overs?), Hartley offdrove thru the midoff fielder, then french cut, then off drove - 12 off over. Hopes & Hartley cost us again - both had early lives.

Harris to Cazzulino - leg glanced - 6 off over. Cazzu (4) snicked Magoffin to slip - 1/7, Kruger in at 3 (for back spasming Doolan - forced to bat at 7?) - wkt mdn. Harris - just 1. Magoffin - just 1. Magoffin to Cowarn - mdn. Kruger (0) snicked Harris to slip - 2/12 (finally Harris had a wkt! Called off for the day about half hr later.

Wandered back into City thru Southbank, over the bridge and thru the Queen St Mall. Caught the Skytrain out to the airport, for flight to Melbourne for overnight stop. Brisbane airport: Pizza & 450 ml Coke: $9.95.

Monday morning, a 7 am Jetstar flight to get to work on time - but cancelled! The long line suggested no early flight seats by the time I got to the Service Desk - so booked a Virgin flight and came back for a Jetstar refund. As so late, was a Flexi fare - so a (rather expensive) breakfast included! - the two sitting with me were also Jetstar 7:00 am refugees. Back at work by 10:30 am.

Botha to capt South Australia - why?

SACA has announced that South African Johan Botha (offspinner, who had a suspect action) will captain them next season. An attempt to 'build' on their Ryobi Cup success into the Sheffield Shield?

They have replaced the current captain (Klinger) with someone who hasn't played 1st-class cricket for 15 months. With Lyon in the same side - there is unlikely to be places for younger spinners Cullen Bailey & Cameron Williams.

Luckily, Australia is not looking for a good spinner, who could trial their wares on the spin friendly Adelaide Oval!
