Swimming superstar Ian Thorpe returns to the pool on Tuesday for his first serious competition since the Athens Olympics.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist will compete in the heats of the 200m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games trials in Melbourne.

Sprint stars Jodie Henry, Libby Lenton and Alice Mills will battle it out in the heats of the 100m freestyle.

In Monday night's action, Brooke Hanson put a horror 2005 behind her to win the 200 metres individual medley.

Craig Stevens won the 400 metres freestyle and Linda Mackenzie the women's 200m freestyle.

Travis Nederpelt was victorious in the 200 metres butterfly.
