An overwhelmed Darren Lockyer admitted he was "touched" by the amazing scenes as thousand of fans poured into Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

An estimated 15,000 fans surrounded a stage set up on the field for Lockyer's special presentation after his teammates provided their inspirational skipper with another momentous victory over Manly.

The sea of fans roared their approval when their hero was presented with a framed glass case containing a piece of thehallowed Lang Park grass inside.

"It's pretty touching actually," said Lockyer of his second farewell following an emotional State of Origin exit on the same ground in July.

"I just saw a bit more vision on the telly.

"Probably from where I was standing on the stage I couldn't see the scope of it all.

"This whole month, and particularly this week, the supporters have been fantastic and I can't thank them enough."

Lockyer was blown away by the number of people who stayed back for his special presentation in which he was given the keys to the city.

"For a lot of people going out on the field was a big thing," he said.

"For the (state) government and the stadium to agree to do it, I thank them for that, because it made the day extra special.

"It wasn't the 70s style of fans jumping the fence after the fulltime siren, there were some great scenes."

Lockyer stood on the stage holding his young boy Sunny in his arms with his wife Loren beside him.

"The last 17 years playing for the Broncos has been an amazing experience," Lockyer told his adoring fans.

"I thank everyone for the wonderful ride which has been so enjoyable.

"I'm going to miss it but I'm going to walk away with a lifetime of great memories and I thank you all for being part of that.

"I'll see you all next week."
