Bulldogs prove too strong for Eels

The Bulldogs continued their mini resurgence with a convincing 30-16 victory over Parramatta in their NRL clash at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.

The five tries to two win was only the Bulldogs third of the season, but it was their second straight since breaking a four-game losing streak against Newcastle last Sunday.

For the Eels, who were searching for their first three-match winning streak since 2003, the loss was a disappointing one considering their opponents were without injured representative forwards Sonny Bill Williams, Mark O'Meley and Willie Mason.

After a quiet opening in which the Bulldogs enjoyed the majority of possession and field position, the home side finally opened the scoring in the 17th minute when winger Hazem El Masri touched down for his first try as he just got the ball down inside the corner post before the Eels cover defence arrived.

Parramatta worked their way back into the contest and were ahead 6-4 with a try to interchange forward Dean Widders (32nd minute) after Bulldogs substitute Brad Morrin knocked on with one of his first touches deep in his own half.

The Eels looked likely to take their slim lead into the break, but El Masri crossed for his second two minutes before the break to put the home side up 10-6 at halftime.

The Eels regained the lead with the best try of the match only a couple minutes into the second stanza, with a lovely John Morris ball putting Adam Peek through a gap in his own half.

Peek got the ball on to Widders, who found a flying Eric Grothe, with the Eels winger using his size and strength to beat opposite Matt Utai to score in the corner.

Burt landed the tough sideline conversion to put the Eels up 12-10 and in search of their third straight win.

The reply from the Bulldogs was swift and severe, with three converted tries in the space of fourteen minutes giving the reigning premieres a match-winning 28-12 lead.
