Gehrig considers retirement from AFL

St Kilda full forward Fraser Gehrig says he is finding football a mental struggle and will weigh up whether to pull the pin on his AFL career at the end of the season.

The 29-year-old, who won the Coleman Medal last season, said physically he felt capable of playing for several more seasons, but mentally he was not sure.

"I'm out-of-contract at the end of the year and if the club sees fit to want to sign me up, then we'll talk, but if they don't, then who knows, it might be the end of the career this year," Gehrig told the AFL website.

"Certainly, the body feels as though it's got a couple of extra years in it, but whether the mind and the mental side of football, which has played on my mind a little bit - we'll see how things go.

"I haven't spoken to the club about renewing a contract or staying on, so we'll both weigh things up and see what decision comes up.

"I certainly haven't said it's my last year."

Gehrig said his mental issues with the game were affecting his form.

"It is a bit of a battle mentally," he said.

"Most of the time it's good - 99 per cent of the time it's good - but the one per cent, whether you need that there and whether you need to be 100 per cent all the time, I don't know.

"That's probably had something to do with a couple of fluctuations in form."
