Undefeated lightweight Michael "Rocky" Katsidis inched closer to his dreams of a world title fight with a fifth round TKO of Filipino hitman Ranee Ganoy at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

Katsidis, who endured a torturous training regime in the lead-up to the bout, trapped Ganoy on the ropes midway through the round and unleashed a flurry of punches before the referee stopped the fight.

The emphatic victory, watched by over 2,000 fans, also ensured Katsidis retained his WBO Pan Asian belt on the way to capturing the attention of international boxing observers.

Ganoy, dubbed the "Aussie Destroyer" after knocking out his previous three Australian opponents, looked relaxed prior to the fight while awaiting Katsidis' entry.

It may have taken Katsidis 10 minutes longer than Ganoy to arrive but the hometown hero didn't disappoint when he knocked down his opponent in the second round.

A punishing right hook sent Ganoy to his knees before the referee handed out a standing eight count.

Ganoy recovered in the next round but a series of combinations by Katsidis late in the fourth round sealed the fight's fate.

Katsidis declared his intention to bring a world title fight to Brisbane after the bout but said the plan had always been about patience.

"Patience was the key tonight and like I said I was always going to use my brains," Katsidis said.

The win took Katsidis to No.2 on the WBO rankings with the title shot just one more fight away.
