Sarwan stars but injury dogs Windies

Marlon Samuels made a stunning contribution with the ball just a day after blazing a string of new batting records as the West Indies had the better of the drawn tour match against Queensland at Allan Border Field on Sunday.

Samuels backed up from Saturday's mesmerising knock of 257 with his first career five-wicket haul that almost secured a late victory for the tourists.

The 24-year-old had been regarded as a contentious selection prior to the tour but his superb all-round performance provided a welcome sight for Windies coach Bennett King, who was left to count a mounting injury toll ahead of the first Test starting at the Gabba on Thursday.

Key batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan took the number of West Indian players under injury clouds to four after he limped off in the final session with a knee injury.

Sarwan received treatment after appearing to twist his knee while taking a catch at leg slip off Samuels' bowling.

He failed to participate in the team's warm-down session after the game.

In-form quick Daren Powell (quad), Wavell Hinds (broken finger) and Brian Lara (finger) joined Sarwan on the injured list during the game with Powell failing to bowl a ball in Queensland's second innings.

Lara was forced to bat at No.8 in the Windies' batting order and was then often caught using his feet to field the ball, rather than his hands.

Windies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul denied his team was in the midst of an injury crisis in the build up to this week's opening Test against Australia at the Gabba.

"Sarwan's going to be alright," he said.
