All smiles in the Diva camp

Lee Freedman is happy, Glen Boss is happy, Tony Santic is happy, and the Victoria Racing Club couldn't be any happier.

But most importantly, Makybe Diva is happy.

And her welfare has been the only concern for those close to her leading up to Tuesday's Melbourne Cup which she will attempt to win for an unprecedented third time.

But if her trainer, jockey and owner decide on Tuesday that the track will be too hard by 3pm when the Cup is run, there is still a chance she won't be there.

Diva fever has hit Melbourne with the Cup build-up centred on the mare who is now being mentioned in the same sentences as Phar Lap.

The public expects her to win, the experts are divided and her trainer will have her ready as she can be after a week of monitoring her condition since her explosive Cox Plate win.

"The comparisons with Phar Lap have been a little embarrassing," Freedman said.

"But who's to say. If she wins tomorrow there won't be adequate words to describe what she's done.

"But the task is enormous."

Makybe Diva will carry 58kg and must set a weight-carrying record for a mare to win, but then she did that last year with 2-1/2 kilos less and the consensus is, that she's better than she was.
