Stevens misses place in Games swim team

Craig Stevens has rolled the selection dice and lost.

The Sydneysider has missed out on making Australia's swim team for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games after failing to produce a quick enough time in his 400m national title win on Monday night.

Stevens opted not to try to secure a spot at the March Games by swimming the 1500m, feeling his focus on the 200m and 400m had left him ill-prepared for the distance event.

The 1500m Olympic finalist's selection problems came to the surface after he failed to make the 200m final on Tuesday.

National head coach Alan Thompson has set down a strict criteria for the 45-strong team with swimmers not posting times ranked in the world top 10 not guaranteed individual swims at next month's Games.

Stevens' 400m swim would have ranked him 20th in the world last year and the cut off was at 18, with backstroker Andrew Lauterstein just scraping in.

It is understood the young Victorian edged out Fran Adcock and Ashleigh McCleery based on FINA pointscore, an evaluation of their swims.

Stevens was still a chance of making the team on the final night, but performances from other swimmers squeezed him out of the 45.

It continued a tough run of outs for Stevens, who famously handed Ian Thorpe a 400m swim at the Athens Olympics.

He failed to make the team for last year's world championships in Montreal after being hampered by a back injury sustained moving house.

Journeyman Brett Hawke is the oldest member of the team at 30 with Queensland's Kylie Palmer the youngest at 15.
