Monette Russo has shown her true fighting spirit, beating an ankle injury to lead Australia to a women's team gold medal in the Commonwealth Games gymnastics.

Australia's team gold at Rod Laver Arena follows wins in Manchester in 2002 and Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

Australia finished with a score of 172.600, while England, without injured captain Beth Tweddle, was second on 164.350 and Canada third with 162.550.

National coach Peggy Liddick hailed her girls as the best Australian team ever and said the plan was to prepare for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"It's the most talented team that we'll produce," she said.

"I'm always proud of the girls and as far as Commonwealth Games go, we treat it as any other comp."

Earlier this week, there was doubt whether Russo would be fit enough to compete on the floor and vault due to an ankle injury suffered at selection trials.

But she competed on all apparatus with a reduced degree of difficulty and after the win, she said her ankle felt good.

"I came here to just do my program and hit my routines and that's what I did, so I'm really happy," she said.

In her international senior debut, Hollie Dykes, 15, was the star of the night, with her graceful performance on beam prompting Liddick to punch the air.

She has qualified in top position for the allround final ahead of Russo, who made history when she won bronze in the event at the world championships last year.

"I think it's really exciting, especially for my first big competition," Dykes said.

"I just did the same as in training and it all paid off."

Dykes also qualified in first place for the beam final and in second position for floor, behind fellow Australian, Ashleigh Brennan.

Brennan, who turned 15 in January, said she was not nervous in her first Games.

"It was just really good to have the home crowd supporting us and I had a really good experience," she said.

Russo also qualified for the uneven bars final and Chloe Sims, 15, goes into the vault final in pole position.

Naomi Russell, 15, took second qualifying spot in the vault final and will also contest the uneven bars final.
