Tall Blacks Boucher signs with Bullets

Tall Blacks basketballer Dillon Boucher has signed a two-year deal with the Brisbane Bullets, a move that brings him closer to his family in New Zealand.

The BreakFree Bullets announced on their website Boucher, 31, had signed with the club for the 2006-2007 seasons of the Australian National Basketball League (ANBL).

Boucher, a 196cm forward, spent last season with the Perth Wildcats after being unwanted by the New Zealand Breakers following two seasons with the Auckland-based team.

Boucher, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist last month, admits he would rather play in his home country.

"I really wanted to come back to New Zealand to be honest," he told Radio Sport.

"But the Breakers never approached me about playing for them. Although I expressed to them that I did want to stay in New Zealand they chose to go (with) different options."

Boucher turned down offers from Perth and Townsville, with Brisbane being closer to home.

Boucher said on the Bullets website he was pleased to have signed with the club and looked forward to working hard for them in the coming season.

"The organisation is very professional and I'm really looking forward to pulling on a Bullets jersey", he said.

Bullets head coach Joey Wright said signing Boucher was significant.

"He demonstrates strength on defence, has good knowledge on the offensive end of the floor, and more importantly than all that, does the little things that make a team better.

"During his career he has shown strong leadership and we are really excited that he's a Bullet now," Wright said.

General manager Jeff Van Groningen said Boucher would be a "great asset" to the Bullets.

"He brings an attitude of doing whatever it takes to win, and has been a strong defensive presence on the teams he's been part of - both in our league and internationally," he said.

"His skills and attitude are things we think we'll really benefit from.

"He wanted to be a BreakFree Bullet - and we wanted him - so I have no doubt it will work well," Van Groningen said.
