Johns given all clear for farewell Test

Andrew Johns' bid to make his representative farewell in next month's Anzac Test remains on track after the Newcastle maestro received a positive prognosis on his injured ankle.

Johns tore part of the lateral ligament in his ankle midway through the first half of Sunday's 18-16 loss to North Queensland, but battled on bravely to see out the match.

Knights doctor Neil Halpin said Johns would have no problem being fit for the May 5 Test against New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium, and would not even rule the champion No.7 out of Saturday night's trip to Melbourne to take on the Storm.

"Joey hasn't ruled himself out of the Melbourne game yet, he's shown over many years that he'll play with just about anything," Halpin said.

"We'll see how he pulls up towards the end of the week. I've made too many premature judgments about Andrew in the past, about whether he'd be right or not.

"It doesn't look too bad, but it's swollen up a lot today and it's still quite sore.

"He should be right for (the Test), I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be okay for that."

Halpin was stunned that Johns was able to withstand the pain enough to play on against the Cowboys, but rejected claims that he did further damage to the ankle by staying on the field.

The Knights medico said there was little chance Johns could do anything to worsen the injury by playing against the Storm.

"It's a matter of whether he can put up with the pain more than anything," Halpin said.

"If there was any chance he could do more damage we'd have to advise him not to play."

The Sydney Roosters meanwhile are still counting the cost of Friday night's loss to Brisbane, with Steve Meredith (knee) and Iosia Soliola (knee) joining the already long injury list at Bondi Junction.

The status of Amos Roberts remains in doubt after the Roosters winger's knee blew up after the game. X-rays revealed no bone damage, with team officials hoping further scans on Tuesday will give them more insight into the injury.

Penrith skipper Tony Puletua will also have scans on a rib cartilage injury which forced him from the field in the opening minutes of Saturday night's loss to Melbourne.

South Sydney's season went from bad to worse with the winless Rabbitohs losing another two players to injury in the 26-18 loss to the Bulldogs.

Luke Stuart became the second Souths prop after Scott Geddes to be ruled out for the season after damaging his left knee midway through the first half, while winger Shannon Hegarty will be sidelined for a few weeks after straining medial ligaments in his knee.

Three players are on report following the weekend's matches, with St George Illawarra hooker Dean Young and Bulldogs front rower Nate Myles to both come under scrutiny for swinging arms, while Canberra's Alan Rothery will be hoping to escape being charged for a high tackle against the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday night.
