Connolly slams AFL stadium barriers move

Despite the frustrations of Fremantle fans boiling over last weekend, Dockers coach Chris Connolly has pleaded with Subiaco Oval administrators not to place barriers between supporters and the action.

Security at Subiaco has come under scrutiny this week, after the Dockers' 11-point loss to Adelaide was marred by incidents of objects being thrown onto the ground by Freo fans, and a refuted report Connolly was spat at during halftime.

As well as the vitriol directed at Connolly during the interval, Subiaco Oval bosses were due to meet on Wednesday to discuss incidents including a full soft drink bottle being hurled at an umpire, and a seat cushion flung at Crows' captain Mark Ricciuto as he left the ground.

However, Connolly said despite passions running high, he had never felt threatened and hoped barriers between the crowd and participants were not the answer.

"I have never felt threatened at all, (and) I didn't feel that the spitting occurred at all," Connolly said.

"After the game, I heard that some things were thrown on the ground, and that is not acceptable.

"That is not good for the game of AFL, and it can't happen. It doesn't matter what the situation, nothing can be thrown on the ground.

"One of the things that makes our game the best in the world is that we don't have fences up and around the ground like other sports in the world. And I hope we are not headed down that track."

In response to the Adelaide loss, Connolly said at least two team changes were on the cards for the game against St Kilda, with Paul Hasleby a definite non-starter because of a hip flexor strain.

Youngster Paul Duffield could make his debut, if he recovers sufficiently from illness that excluded him last week, while tough tackling Troy Cook will again be closely considered.

Despite giant ruckman Aaron Sandilands being ranked second in the AFL for hitouts, one behind Dean Cox, Connolly conceded on Wednesday his side's clearance rate was a huge worry.

After conceding three early first quarter goals against Adelaide which ultimately cost the win, the Dockers' mentor said it was an area his team had to improve.

"They read what Aaron is doing, and there has got to be a lot more flexibility in where he hits his balls, and a lot more support in and around the ball," Connolly said.

"It is clearly an area we have got to rectify, we are being clearly beaten, we are not even breaking even and it is putting us under enormous pressure particularly early in the game."

Sunday's match against St Kilda will be Fremantle's second trip to Launceston this season, having subsided there to Hawthorn in round one.

Despite never having recorded a victory at Aurora Stadium, Connolly said he was not concerned at the Dockers' history at the venue.

"I don't really look back at it historically, I think we have played some pretty good footy at Launceston."
