Crocker's record a cracker

Sydney Roosters utility Michael Crocker has only played three representative rugby league games but he already has an enviable record.

The 23-year-old made his international debut for Australia in Carcassonne and helped himself to two tries as Australia beat a plucky France elite selection 34-10 in the opening game of the European leg of the Kangaroo tour.

Crocker now has four tries in representative football this year - two in State of Origin for Queensland and two for the Kangaroos - the same number he scored for the beaten NRL grand finalists in 22 matches in 2003.

"It's pretty scary," Crocker said.

"I have scored the same amount of tries in representative football as I have in club matches. I just put my head down and went for the line.

"I'm probably getting a bit selfish."

Crocker's performance was the standout among the four players - Joel Clinton, Trent Waterhouse and Luke Lewis were the others - who made their Australian debuts before a healthy crowd of more than 7,000 in southern France and vaulted him into contention for the opening Test against Great Britain in two weeks time.

He started tonight's match at hooker but shifted to the back row when Brett Kimmorley was introduced in the second half and was equally effective in both positions.

He darted out of dummy half in the 10th minute and found the French defence napping for Australia's opening try before adding his second 55 minutes later when he finished off some great work from Anthony Minichiello and Craig Gower.

"I prefer playing in the back row, but just to get out there and play in a game like that, it's just good to be in the middle," he said.
