Adelaide City has continued its march towards another national soccer league finals series with a solid 2-0 victory over struggling Sydney United at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Veteran City striker Claudio Pelosi's deadly poaching and Goran Lozanovski's wizardry proved too much for hapless Sydney which is trying too avoid the wooden spoon.

City's ninth win this season cemented its top six position and continued the club's resurgence under caretaker coach Zoran Matic.

Pelosi again proved the master around goals with the breakthrough goal just before halftime, his eighth goal of the season while flamboyant Lozanovski curled in the decisive second from a free kick in the 93rd minute.

The 36-year-old Italian prodded the ball home from five metres after a glaring error by defender Dave Barrett in the 43rd minute.

Barrett totally miscontrolled a harmless cross from City captain Ante Kovacevic, kicking it across goal and straight to an unmarked Pelosi.

City was more aggressive from the start and stretched the United defence on the flanks with Lozanovski proving a particular threat early.

Lanky United goalkeeper Vanja Ivesa kept United in the hunt with a run of crucial saves early.

He dived sideways to stop a spectacular volley by an airborne Pelosi after just eight minutes as the striker accepted a cross from City's Argentinian midfielder Mariano Aguero.

Lozanovski beat his man in the 12th minute and drilled a low shot on target which Ivesa just got down to block.
