New Zealand let Australia off the hook in a tense tri-series clash at the SCG.

The Black Caps blew three key chances in the field as Australia scrambled to a two-wicket win, chasing down 219 with two overs to spare.

Hussey finished unbeaten on 65 in a result that secured Australia a berth in the best-of-three finals series.

Man of the match Michael Clarke made 75 after twice being dropped.

New Zealand plays England in Adelaide on Tuesday and Australia's next match is against England on Friday, also in Adelaide.

The battle between the touring sides will be vital in working out who plays Australia in the best of three finals next month.

The Australians return to their respective homes and gather in Adelaide later in the week.
