The Football Kingz have beaten Newcastle United 2-1 in an uninspiring National Soccer League match in Newcastle.

Andy Vlahos broke a 1-1 half-time deadlock with an easy goal on 87 minutes from a Mark Atkinson cross.

The win capped off a long day for the Kingz who left for Australia at 4am and was disrupted when the team coach broke down between Sydney and Newcastle.

"We've had a difficult day," Football Kingz coach Ken Dugdale said.

"I thought we went about our work with a good attitude given the circumstances and I thought we played well."

Newcastle United coach Ian Crook dipped his hat to the Kingz.

"We would have liked to have finished on a good note," he said.

"Full credit to the Kingz they deserved the result, they came here with a good attitude.

"We've worked very, very hard for a long, long time now.

"The last 13 weeks with our backs against the wall with a lot of bodies out ... we looked a bit flat and they played well."
