Reds angry over loss of scrum doctor

Queensland are upset to have been barred from using scrum doctor Alex Evans' expert tutelage before Saturday night's Super 14 Australian derby against the Brumbies.

As a Wallabies technical assistant, Evans, who effectively doubles as the Reds scrum advisor, was put off-limits to Queensland this week.

Wallabies forwards coach Michael Foley, a tight-five technical assistant to both ACT and NSW, was also prevented from helping prepare the Brumbies for the Suncorp Stadium clash.

The Australian Rugby Union ruling for advisors to take a back seat for local derbies was instituted to ensure no repeats of an advisor allegedly sharing team tactics before one interstate clash several seasons ago.

Reds coach Eddie Jones said he could understand the reasoning but felt there was nothing to fear if advisors worked solely with one team.

"What we're talking about here is improving players," Jones said.

"That should be the primary focus.

"You talk about helping the World Cup, this isn't consistent with helping the World Cup is it?

Jones drew the parallel with Wallabies skills coach Scott Wisemantel who is also working as the Waratahs runner.

"So does that mean for three games a year he's not allowed to run messages? It doesn't make sense," he said.

"If he's working with two teams it makes sense but not if he's only working with one.

"I think the utilisation of Wallabies coaches this year has been excellent but I can't see why it won't work during local derby week.

"We're just missing out a week's development of the players.

"(Evans) is fantastic for our young forwards and to not have him this week is disappointing."

Brumbies coach Laurie Fisher had no problem with the withdrawal of services of Foley, who is less hands-on than Evans.

Former Wallabies hooker Mark Bell assists the Western Force tight-five but will also have to take a step back when they play their three local derbies, starting against NSW on March 2.
