Keeping team is Kings' next NBL trick

And now for the Sydney Kings' next trick - maintaining its NBL championship winning team.

Barely 24 hours after the much-maligned Kings finally claimed a maiden NBL title, their outgoing chief executive Grant Cadee was confident of another coup - holding onto the victorious outfit despite next season's drastic salary cap cuts.

Only two players - bench regulars Travis Lane and Michael Kingma - are contracted for next season when the salary cap drops from $1,050,000 to $700,000.

That means the likes of skipper Shane Heal, likely MVP Chris Williams and fellow class import Kavossy Franklin are up for grabs next season if the Kings can't afford them.

But Cadee, who will now relocate to Melbourne for family reasons, said the lure of the Kings' winning program would keep most, "if not all" players in the harbour city.

He said the time of bidding wars was over in the NBL and that only successful cultures would attract players.

"The situation in the NBL now is ... all the clubs are financially making really good decisions and really being responsible with player payments," he said.

"You are now going to have to build a program that people want to play for - that is how you will recruit players.

"Given the success that the program has enjoyed, these players will want to play for the Sydney Kings and I think that's more important than a few extra bucks.

"(Kings coach) Brian (Goorjian) is going to be a great anchor for the team in future years and he's such a great coach.
