Soccer Australia doubts linger

Soccer Australia director Paul Afkos said there was "still a lot of work to be done" to get Frank Lowy and his team to take charge of the ailing organisation.

The extraordinary general meeting in Sydney on Saturday was cancelled because of a legal technicality, leaving the fate of the proposed new board up in the air.

While acting SA chairman Remo Nogarotto and a number of the game's stakeholders - representatives from the national soccer league clubs and the powerful state bodies - pushed the line that Lowy's appointment was a fait accompli, Afkos wasn't so sure.

"I think it (the vote) would be pretty close and could still go either way," Afkos said.

"There is division there and there is still a lot of work to be done.

"Some people have different views and we have to see whether Mr Lowy can be accommodated."

Complications in the wording of the resolution meant 100 per cent of the game's stakeholders needed to vote in favour of the six-person Lowy team.

An amendment of the resolution next week is expected to drop that number to a simple majority of stakeholders, and while most of the talk on Saturday was positive, Afkos was of the opinion there was a long way to go.

A general meeting will be held in the next month to finally vote on the issue.

While there is understood to be a core group of stakeholders against the Lowy ticket, the simple majority needed suggests a new board will get the nod - particularly with the likes of the powerful NSW Soccer Federation being in favour of change.
