Cockbain still hungry for Cup glory

World Cup veteran Matt Cockbain insists he still has plenty to offer at international level despite missing out on the first Wallaby squad of the season.

The Queensland Reds lock or blindside flanker received the consolation prize of Australia A captaincy for next week's two-match tour of Japan.

But the 30-year-old remains determined to win back a spot in the senior squad and figure in another World Cup campaign.

"I was obviously disappointed not to be selected in the main squad however life goes on and we have to work our way back in," Cockbain said.

"The focus will be to play as well as I can and that will be the focus for all of us in that squad.

"I think I've got a lot left in me."

Cockbain's disappointment about missing selection in the squad for the opening two Tests of the year against Ireland and Wales was compounded by his belief he has had a strong Super 12 season for the Reds.

"That's probably one of the disappointing factors I suppose," he said.

"If you looked at last season and this season I've probably played a lot better."

Wallaby coach Eddie Jones says Australia A players will be back in contention for the year's third Test against England in Melbourne on June 21.

Captaincy is nothing new to Cockbain who has led the Reds in the past and also skippered the Wallabies against Oxford on tour in Britain.

Cockbain's one of 12 Queenslanders who comprise half of the Australia A touring party, including 20-year-old halfback Josh Valentine who has been made vice-captain.

Other Wallabies in the party are props Nick Stiles and Fletcher Dyson, breakaway David Croft, hooker Adam Freier, lock Justin Harrison and winger Mark Bartholomeusz.

The team will play a President's XV on June 5 and the Japan national team on June 8.

New South Wales prop Matt Dunning was selected despite facing a NSW Rugby Union disciplinary hearing two days after the final match over alleged misbehaviour during Waratahs' post-season celebrations.

Valentine's selection highlights his rapid rise this season.

"Quite often with the young guys they're a little bit gun shy but he's quite happy to throw his two cents worth in," Cockbain said.

"A bit cocky is what you'd call it."

Meanwhile, Cockbain said he was inclined to stay another season with the Reds next year rather than head overseas.

"At this stage I'm probably more in mind to stay because it's been very difficult to get some good offers from overseas," he said.

"I'm sort of limited in the Europe area because of the passport and the import situation and that's a little bit disappointing but can't be helped.

"I've just asked (the Queensland Rugby Union) for a little bit of time to sort some issues out."
