Try telling Jason McCartney dreams cannot come true.

The Bali survivor, whose biggest challenge in life was playing AFL football again, on Friday night went one step better to help the Kangaroos beat Richmond by three points.

The 29-year-old then promptly told the Telstra Dome crowd of 43,200 and a national television audience he was retiring and would go out on a winning note.

There was speculation during the match that McCartney would call it quits after the final siren.

He first paid public tribute to wife Nerissa, his parents and his numerous friends who were at the game before making his surprise announcement.

"I suppose this is no better time - I think I've used up every inch of my determination through my fitness and mental effort," McCartney said.

"I find it fitting now I will hang up my boots as of tonight and go out on a great note, because I am spent.

"It's been a tough time, but that's enough for me."

McCartney said he made his decision after being told on Tuesday night this would be his much anticipated comeback match.

"I knew I didn't have much more in me, it's been a huge mental battle to get where I am today, physically my body is still healing and it needs a rest," he said.
