Winning Wallabies look to improve

It won't have England running scared, but the Wallabies delivered a solid performance to post a 30-10 victory over Wales in their rugby Test at Telstra Stadium.

The Wallabies face northern hemisphere heavyweights, England in Melbourne next Saturday after the world No.1-ranked side edged New Zealand 15-13 earlier in Wellington.

The Wallabies scored five tries to one, but their performance was far from polished, with ball handling scrappy.

Winger Wendell Sailor, who had only scored once in his seven Test rugby career, crossed twice within three minutes early in the match to set up the win.

Australian coach Eddie Jones wanted to see his back three of Sailor, Chris Latham and Joe Roff in action after they had limited involvement against Ireland last week.

While Latham scored an excellent solo try, the ball rarely made it wide as Australia was forced to turn it back inside to gain ground.

"We'd like to move the ball but we're making errors early in the phase ... we've just got to get a bit sharper in close, that will come," Jones said.

Credit must go to the gutsy Welsh side, who had been written off after its poor Six Nations campaign, and the scoreline would have been closer if it was able to convert pressure into points.

Jones rated it an improved performance on their 45-16 win over Ireland in Perth.

"We've got plenty of work to do, it was a step up, they were much tough opposition than Ireland," Jones said.

"That was a good workout for us, we've trained pretty hard this week ... and we're pretty happy with the progress we're getting but we're still a long way to go.

"We've only been together three weeks and we've got guys playing for the first time together and it's going to take time to get that combination."

Australia was able to soak up early Welsh pressure before former rugby league international Sailor opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a length of the field try that had the 63,688-strong crowd on its feet.

Sailor took the ball in the in-goal area, tip-toed along the sideline and then stormed downfield, beating four defenders to touch down.

His second try came three minutes later when Latham made a break and put a kick through, and Sailor pounced on a lucky bounce.
