Dobson in mix to move to Hull

Snubbed Canberra halfback Michael Dobson is tipped to make an unorthodox move from Queensland Cup to English Super League following a spate of injuries at Hull.

Dobson, 21, is believed to be earmarked by Hull coach Peter Sharp as a replacement for playmaker Richard Horne, who is out for six weeks with a neck injury.

Dobson is running around with Raiders' feeder club Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup after failing to crack the Canberra halves combination of Todd Carney and Terry Campese.

But Sharp is still believed to be seeking out Dobson, who is off contract with the Raiders at the end of the season.

If talks with Dobson fall through, it is believed former NRL halfback Brett Firman is an option for Hull.

"We haven't officially approached anyone yet, it is just an option we are looking at," Sharp told The Hull Daily Mail newspaper.

"I'm not sure if it would be a loan deal or a permanent deal at this stage because it's just something we are considering.

"We need to find a player first and then decide from there if it is going to be long-term or short-term, or a loan type of arrangement."

Apart from Horne, former Cowboys Matt Sing, ex-Shark Adam Dykes, Paul King, Garreth Carvell, Richard Whiting and Graeme Horne are on the sidelines for Hull who are one place above bottom team Castleford.

Dobson is used to taking an unusual path to first grade.

He stepped into the big shoes of Stacey Jones at Catalans Dragons and played for Wigan in England in 2006 before making his NRL debut for Canberra last year.

He finished 2007 as Canberra's highest point scorer.

A Raiders spokesman said the NRL club had not been officially approached by Hull but claimed Dobson had been "in the mix" for Canberra's Sunday clash against Wests Tigers due to his Queensland Cup form.

Dobson scored a try and kicked five goals to help Souths Logan down reigning premier Tweed Heads 38-20 last weekend in front of Raiders coach Neil Henry.

Dobson will again line up for Souths Logan against Northern Pride Saturday in a clash between the Queensland Cup's two undefeated teams.
