Slater brilliance gives Storm victory

The reigning premiers continued their winning ways with a come from behind 23-16 victory over the luckless Canberra Raiders to complete the NRL's sixth round.

Raiders coach Neil Henry raised questions about a second half decision by video referee Bill Harrigan to refuse a try to winger Colin Best that would have handed momentum Canberra's way.

"If you had gone half a frame again I think you could see the ball was in the air and the elbow was in and then the next frame the ball was down and the elbow was out," Henry said.

"In that regard (if) you super slow-mo there has got to be an element of doubt to say well maybe the ball was down and the elbow was in at some stage, some to me, I'd go benefit of the doubt."

"It was touch and go."

But he refused to directly criticise either Harrigan or referee Jared Maxwell.

"I've been down that track before and I think it cost me $10,000," Henry said, referring to the NRL policy of fines for criticism of match officials.

"I'll have at look at them (the questionable decisions), we'll talk to Billy about the best no try or no benefit of the doubt and talk to (referee's coach) Robert Finch and move on."

For the Storm the 16-4 halftime lead to Canberra was a serious jolt.

Coach Craig Bellamy said his players knew he was far from impressed at the break.

"It's been a fair while since I've given them a touch up at half time but they got one today."

Asked if he could remember what Bellamy had said, captain Cam Smith couldn't: "I think the boys were too busy getting all the spit out of our face".

"When he goes off it's a spray literally."

The rant wasn't without justification.

The rampant Raiders played all over the top of Melbourne in the opening forty minutes.

Halfback and stand-in skipper Todd Carney pushed his representative credentials again through a solid kicking game and his ability to set up tries including the second of the night to second rower Nigel Plum.

But it didn't matter because in the second half the mercurial Billy Slater awoke.

With the Storm still trailing at the 65 minute mark Slater sneaked through Canberra's defence and dashed 30 metres for a converted try to level the scores at 16-16.

From there the Raiders looked beaten and Cooper Cronk confirmed that with eight minutes to go when he slotted a field goal to make it 17-16.

Six minutes later Israel Folau scored out wide to break the hope of 15,000 fans who had braved the Canberra cold.

Melbourne came out of the match with two injury concerns. Dallas Johnson and Sika Manu both sustained ankle injuries and are in doubt for Saturday's match in Townsville.
