Ryles future at the Dragons unclear

Jason Ryles' future at St George Illawarra remains up in the air after the former Test prop refused to rule out leaving the club now or at the end of the NRL season.

Ryles dismissed rumours of his unhappiness at the club following much needed 26-6 win over the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium, but a move to either Cronulla or the English Super League remains on the cards.

Earlier this week he was named as part of an elaborate three-way trade involving himself and Cronulla pair Brett Kimmorley and Ben Ross, Ryles admitting he was still none the wiser as to whether he would see out the season - or the final two years of his contract - at the Dragons.

"I don't know what's going to come of that - apparently I was unhappy and all that," Ryles said.

"That's not the case. I enjoy coming to training with all the boys and I enjoy my time here.

"What happens next year is eight months away so we'll sort that out later. I'd like to stay but in saying that I'm open to whatever (manager George Mimis) comes up with."

Incoming Dragons coach Wayne Bennett is a known fan of the in-form front-rower and, while Ryles said he would speak to Bennett before making a decision on his future, it wasn't enough to guarantee his staying.

"Wayne's a great coach but it's not the be all and end all," Ryles said.

"I've just got to do what's best for myself and whatever ideas the club has for me."

The news was much brighter on the Matt Cooper front with the injured centre hoping to re-sign with the club by the end of next week after having his future at the club endorsed by Bennett.

Cooper, off contract at the end of the season, was hoping that this week's bye would give all parties time to get together.

"I've spoken to Wayne, everything looks good, I had a chat about next year and he's keen to keep me at the club so it's good signs for me," Cooper said.

"I definitely want to stay, it's sort of made my decision a bit easier after talking to Wayne.

"It's been pretty chaotic at the club, I still haven't had a formal offer, I'm just waiting for the club to contact my manager and offering me a contract."
