Port not intimidated by Gary Ablett Jnr

Given Geelong ace Gary Ablett's superlative display against North Melbourne last week, and his family's reputation for prodigious talent, it is not hard to imagine the "god" tag being thrown around again soon.

Port Adelaide hard nut Michael Wilson, though, went out of his way to make it clear Ablett can be stopped as the Power face up to the near-impossible task of beating Geelong at home, one week after the Power's humiliating loss to Carlton.

"He's a quality player no doubt, but he's no bloomin' god of the world, we can still play him, he's just a bloke," Wilson said.

"Dom Cassisi's done it in the past, Kane Cornes has done jobs like that, we've had games where he's had very few touches, it won't be just one person, it'll have to be an effort from a couple of taggers and around the ground as well."

Wilson emphasised the need for a collective effort to ensure Ablett was not given too much possession or latitude, volunteering to help out.

"If I'm not (helping out) then I should be I think, a player like that as good as he is you can't just put one person on him and say good luck, you're not a team person if you don't help out the tagger," he said.

"He is a tough bloke to tackle, once he rolls the shoulders and the arms slip over the shoulder you might give away a free kick ... but Dom can do a job on him."

Port pushed through a searching training run at the club's Alberton headquarters on Wednesday, often while berated by their steamed up coach Mark Williams.

There were many things to be angry about on the tape of the Carlton game, in which Port - not for the first time this season - managed to turn a seemingly comfortable win into a shattering defeat.

"I definitely think (hardness) is a bit of a mental thing, we highlight it, Choco (Williams) does our videos for us and our line coaches do our videos with us and I will put my hand up that there's a few that I'd rather delete off the computer and not look at," Wilson said.

"There's a couple times where if you've got to go, you've got to go and sometimes you don't, you look at it you're real disappointed and you hope you're better next time.

"People have pointed out we may have done it in the past, but we always come out with a bloody good response, we still win games, we get up the top of the ladder, we won a premiership when people put the heat on us last time, we just need that type of commitment, that response, again this time.

"We've got a few embarrassed people who've got a lot to prove for the rest of the year and that's what we're going to be working on."

Nick Lower, Matt Thomas, Adam Thomson and Damon White are all players likely to push for selection this week, while Shaun Burgoyne will be back from his contentious three-match ban.
