Bulldogs pair Ben Roberts and Lee Te Maari have been fined and stood down from Monday night's NRL match against St George Illawarra over their involvement in an altercation at a Cronulla nightclub on the weekend.

Each player was hit with a $2500 fine, with another $2500 suspended pending any further breaches of the club's code of conduct.

It was alleged Roberts and Te Maari had been drinking at the Sting Bar when the fight broke out.

The Bulldogs employed their own investigation team to look into the incident after police washed their hands of the matter when no complaint was made.

The club refused to discuss what role the duo had played in the scuffle, only saying the Roberts and Te Maari were guilty of "poor behaviour".

Roberts and Te Maari will both play for the Bulldogs' NSW Cup side this weekend with boom youngster Ben Barba called into the NRL squad to make his debut off the bench.

No decision has been made on Te Maari's replacement.

"The investigation revealed that Ben and Lee were guilty of poor behaviour, both players were upfront in admitting to this and they're being punished accordingly," chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

"As a club we hold all our players to the highest of standards and we will continue to work hard to ensure that these expectations are met.

"Money from the fines will be invested into the club's welfare and education programmes."

Barba has been the standout player in the Toyota Cup this season with his 27 tries almost double that of his nearest rival.

He is also the competition's leading pointscorer with 238 points, exactly 100 better than the second best effort of 138 by New Zealand Warriors fullback Kevin Locke.

Earlier this year outgoing coach Steve Folkes said he would resist calls to blood Barba despite his sensational form.

Folkes claimed it would be "criminal" of him to throw the 19-year-old into the top grade before he was ready.
