Wallabies prop Greg Holmes and Australia A rugby skipper Morgan Turinui will co-captain the Queensland Reds on a development tour in Europe later this month.

Holmes, who has 13 Tests and 35 Queensland caps to his name, said he didn't expect the co-captaincy call from coach Phil Mooney and was rapt to take on the role.

"When I was one of the younger players in the squad it was something I didn't really give much thought to," he said.

"I suppose the longer you manage to hang around, these things come up, it's nice to know the coaches are thinking about you in that way.

"I'm sure if some of the Wallaby guys had been going on the tour I wouldn't have been given the opportunity, but I have and I'll take it.

"I'll do my best to lead by example."

The squad will leave Brisbane on August 19 and will play matches against Irish sides Ulster, Connacht and Leinster and French provincial side, Nice.

Greg Holmes (co-capt), Albert Anae, Adam Byrnes, James Hanson, Scott Higginbotham, Leroy Houston, Van Humphries, Jack Kennedy, Poutasi Luafutu, Jake Schatz, Andrew Shaw, Shon Siemonek, Robert Simmons, James Slipper, Morgan Turinui (co-capt), Anthony Faingaa, Charlie Fetoai, Will Genia, James Harvey, Digby Ioane, Jono Lance, Ben Lucas, Luke Morahan, Ben Tapuai, Aidan Toua.
