Former Western Bulldogs champion midfielder Scott West has joined the coaching staff of AFL wooden spooners Melbourne.

West, 34, played 324 matches with the Bulldogs before reluctantly retiring at the end of last season, after being restricted by injury to four games.

The Demons will make use of his ball-winning nous, making him their assistant midfield coach, specialising in improving the club's work at the stoppages.

West won a record seven best and fairest awards with the Bulldogs and was twice runner-up in the Brownlow Medal.

"This is a great opportunity for me to further my coaching credentials, and I'm certainly looking forward to working with what is a young and developing playing list," he said.
