Cummins confident of Force success

Despite the impending departure of star flyhalf Matt Giteau, in-form winger Nick Cummins says it was a no-brainier to reject an offer from the Brumbies to re-sign with the Western Force for another two Super 14 seasons.

The Force have been in a state of limbo since Giteau announced he would return to Canberra at the end of the season, with the futures of James O'Connor, Drew Mitchell and Richard Brown still up in the air.

But while many people are predicting doom and gloom for the Force, with Tamaiti Horua, Scott Staniforth and Tai McIsaac also set to leave at season's end, Cummins said the re-signing of fellow up-and-comers Sam Wykes, Richard Stanford and Tom Hockings convinced him the future was bright.

"I like it here and with a couple of the boys that are staying I think it's going in the right direction and I think we'll be good for next year," Cummins said on Wednesday.

"There was an offer with the Brumbies but I'm keen to show some loyalty here because (Force coach) John Mitchell gave me a shot here when I first started so I'm happy to hang around.

"The boys have the calibre to do some good things and I'm not sure who we're getting in next year but I've heard there's a few names that are being thrown out that will help us in the crusade."

Cummins starred in the Force's 39-7 triumph of the Reds last week and is fast becoming a key cog in the club's backline, not to mention a fan favourite due to his curly mullet, which he fondly dubs a 'cullet'.

The 21-year-old, who has 14 Super caps to his name, burst onto the international scene with the Australian Sevens before linking up with the Force last season.

"Nick's been in the program for two years now and the development he's shown has been huge, physically and mentally," Mitchell said.

"He's a bit of a laugh. He's pretty unique and that hair-do is going pretty good at the moment."

Meanwhile, the Force will again be without star back Cameron Shepherd when they tackle the sixth-placed Hurricanes at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.

Shepherd has missed the past two games after re-injuring the same ankle he broke while playing for the Wallabies last year.

"We'd like to think at the moment he's a week away," Mitchell said.

"He's come back into preparation this week, he's been in more sessions than in previous weeks, so that's a positive sign."

The Force, who enter the round six points adrift of fourth spot, named an unchanged line-up from the team that dismantled the Reds last week.

But the Hurricanes were dealt a blow when All Black Piri Weepu was forced out with a hamstring injury, with Willie Ripia named as his replacement at five-eighth.

Western Force: Drew Mitchell, Scott Staniforth, Ryan Cross, James O'Connor, Nick Cummins, Matt Giteau, Josh Valentine, Richard Brown, David Pocock, Matt Hodgson, Nathan Sharpe (capt), Tom Hockings, Ben Castle, Tai McIsaac, Pek Cowan. Res: Luke Holmes, AJ Whalley, Sam Wykes, Tamaiti Horua, Chris O'Young, Junior Pelesasa, Haig Sare.
