Waratahs retain Horne for two more years

The NSW Waratahs have announced their second major re-signing in two days, locking up teenage star Rob Horne for two more Super 14 seasons.

One of the hottest young properties in Australian rugby, Horne's retention comes hot on the heels of skipper Phil Waugh committing to the Waratahs and the ARU until after the 2011 World Cup.

Horne said was excited by the opportunity to continue his career at NSW.

"This was a really big decision for me, but I'm happy that I've now done the deal and can get on with the rest of our 2009 campaign," Horne said on Wednesday.

"I've come through the system with NSW and they showed a lot of faith to give me a chance at Super 14 level last year.

"I learned so much from the 2008 season. Being around elite players such as Phil Waugh, Al Baxter, Lote Tuqiri, they're professionals in every sense of the word and you learn really quickly exactly what you need to put in if you're going to contribute at this level.

"I know over the next couple of years I'll continue to learn off those guys and, in doing so, hopefully I'll be able to play my part in helping the Tahs achieve more success."

A member of the successful 2007 Australian schoolboys team, Horne moved into the Junior Waratahs program in 2008 on a professional contract and represented Australia at Sevens level in San Diego.

After playing a significant role during the pre-season, Horne was thrust into the Super 14 as an 18-year-old during NSW's round-four victory over the Brumbies.

He then earned his first starting cap against the Western Force in Perth, celebrating his selection with the opening try of the game.

Horne went on to represent Australia at the Junior World Cup but a groin injury cut short his 2008 club season for Southern Districts.
