Wirrpanda's future uncertain at Eagles

West Coast veteran David Wirrpanda is expected to announce his AFL retirement on Tuesday, ending his glittering 227-game career.

The Eagles have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon where Wirrpanda will confirm he is hanging up the boots after 14 seasons at the elite level.

Eagles coach John Worsfold claimed on Monday he was still unaware about Wirrpanda's intentions.

But Worsfold did confirm he wouldn't try to talk the 30-year-old out of his decision.

"I'm going to meet with him tomorrow morning and get his views on where he sits," Worsfold said.

"It's probably like any decision.

"There's a little bit of negotiation in it but if I plead with him to play on and he says 'get stuffed', then it's not really a joint decision, and vice-versa.

"I'll meet with him tomorrow and get a feel for where he's at and what he wants to do, how he's thinking and what he feels."

Wirrpanda, a fleet-footed defender who also spent stints up forward later in his career, missed just four games this season and was a solid contributor to the side, averaging almost 20 possessions a match to go with his 11 goals.

But Worsfold said Wirrpanda's age and the state of his body could have left him vulnerable had he decided to play on.

"You don't know how the season is going to pan out," Worsfold said.

"On the real positive note he plays every game and plays really well and has a big impact on the team going forward.

"And on the other hand it could go pear-shaped where he gets injuries and struggles to string games together and has to play in the WAFL to get form and fitness.

"You do have to weigh up both extremes and you have to be prepared to deal with both.

"It's always great if it goes beautifully, but you have to be mentally prepared that it might not and know how you are going to cope with that."

While Wirrpanda's memorable career has come to a close, Worsfold tried to end any speculation utility Brent Staker would be put up as trade bait.

Staker has played just 110 games in seven seasons at the club and was restricted to just six appearances this year due to a frustrating run of hand injuries.

But Worsfold said the 25-year-old was on the verge of discovering his best football as a big-bodied midfielder.

"I think he's just starting to really reach his maturity as a player, so we are excited about that," Worsfold said.

"His aim is to try to make it as a midfielder and have a bigger influence through there.

"He felt as though he was starting to achieve that until he had those two long-term injuries."

Worsfold also backed tagger Tyson Stenglein to bounce back in 2010 after a forgettable season.

The Eagles confirmed Matt Rosa (hip/ankle), Andrew Embley (ankle), Matt Priddis (knee), and Adam Cockie (plate removed from shoulder) would undergo post-season surgery.
