I won't babysit Fevola: Lions skipper

Brisbane captain Jonathan Brown says he won't be bad boy Brendan Fevola's "babysitter" and it's up to the former Carlton forward to rebuild his own AFL career and image.

"How old is he? Twenty nine?" said Brown on Friday, when asked if Brisbane's leadership group had laid down the law to new acquisition Fevola.

"I think he can look after himself.

"I'm certain not going to turn into his baby sitter and I don't think the rest of the boys or Vossy (coach Michael Voss) are thinking about that either."

Brown said Fevola had made a positive start with the Lions after being traded by the Blues for publicly disgracing himself at the Brownlow Medal awards night.

"He's very keen to do well up and here and very motivated for a big season and to be part of a premiership team.

"He's already start off very strongly."

The Lions' pre-season camp at Noosa Heads has given Fevola the opportunity to meet his new teammates and settle in and Brown said he had no plans to pull him aside and set any ground rules.

"He obviously reads what's written in the newspapers," said Brown. "He's smart enough to realise he's made a couple of mistakes, but he hasn't killed anyone.

"He's a terrific footballer and his previous few years have been fantastic and he's capable of kicking 100 goals in a season.

"He's aware of what's happened and the reasons why he had to leave Carlton and he's very keen to make amends and play good footy in this new strip.

"He'll be a great addition for us."

The influence of former Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews and now Voss, both strong disciplinarians, has set a standard at the Lions which Fevola will not want to breach.

But Brown said Fevola, like any other player, would have to take responsibility for his own actions on and off the field.

"I came through in the Leigh Matthews era and Vossy was a part of that and Leigh was very big on letting men be men and letting them make decisions for themselves." said Brown.

"If you treat them like kids, you can't expect them to go out on the field and make responsible decisions, you can't just turn the tap on."

"As a captain I am very much for blokes taking responsibility for themselves.

"I expect them to train very hard and play very hard and they can have a good time at the same time as long as it doesn't affect their football.

"The reality is you are always representing your footy club and you're always representing your code."

Fevola replaces Sydney-bound Daniel Bradshaw up front, could form a deadly forward combination with Brown despite some concerns they styles may require some adjustments.

"I don't see too much changing because Daniel Bradshaw and myself had a really good combination over the years," said Brown.

"Fev's very similar to Braddy (Bradshaw), he's mainly a full forward and I'm mainly a centre-half forward.

"The only time Fev and I have played together was in the All Star game last year and we worked really well together than night.

"We're two different players, in two different positions and I think we'll compliment each other.

"We have to get the chemistry right, but I'm pretty sure that will come together pretty quick."
