Alexander has 'no excuse' to miss game

Wallabies and Brumbies prop Ben Alexander is confident of being fit for the start of the Super 14 season after a diligent early return to training cost him a fractured finger.

Alexander, who cemented a place as Australia's starting tight-head prop in 2009, broke his little finger when he collided with a Brumbies Academy player during a training exercise and could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Should he not require surgery, he is confident he could be available for the Brumbies' opening round match against the Western Force in Perth.

"I can still do the running and stuff so I've got no excuse not to be fit come the first game," he told reporters on Monday.

"Hopefully if I don't need an operation I should be right for that first game.

" ... It was a bit of a nothing event, no spectacular collision or anything.

"I just sort of put my hands up to break the impact so we didn't butt heads ... I must have had my hand at the wrong angle and I felt it go straight away."

Ironically, Alexander had returned to Brumbies training a week early after earning a summer break after the Wallabies' spring tour.

But he said it was better to have suffered the injury a month out from the Super 14 kick-off than midway through the relatively short tournament.

"I wasn't overdoing it or anything, it could have happened any day of the week ... it was just a nothing accident," he said.

"It's definitely a good time of the year to have it ... I'd be happier to get it now than in a month's time."

His injury adds to a mounting toll for the Brumbies, who lost two other props to injury last week.

Jerry Yanuyanutawa was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left foot and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks while Brumbies Academy prop Jono Owen will miss three weeks after sustaining a grade one strain in his right calf muscle on Thursday.

John Ulugia has returned to the Brumbies on a short-term contract to provide extra front-row coverage.
