Fremantle to tap into Anzac Day spirit

Fremantle will tap into the Anzac Day spirit to eliminate any complacency in Sunday night's AFL clash with struggling Richmond at Subiaco Oval.

The winless Tigers have been woeful this season, with their average losing margin of 59.5 points per game showing just how far behind the rest of the competition they are.

Fremantle have enjoyed a solid record in recent Anzac Day clashes, upsetting Sydney last year and coming within one point of Geelong in 2008.

Dockers coach Mark Harvey has urged his team to remember the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers in the past and even revealed how his own grandfather got caught up in World War II trying to protect Australia's borders.

"He was involved in Darwin for probably two years I think, around 1943 to 1945, and it's actually the first time I've heard him speak about it," Harvey said.

"He was quite emotional about it and it's not something you like to talk to him about.

"He was up there and he had a specific role that he had to play.

"They were under siege, I didn't realise how heavy it was up there and what was taking place, the Japanese (air strikes) and that.

"He's still alive and the question was asked: are there any diggers or your mates still alive? He said no, so that sort of really hit home.

"If you ask me, all teenagers should be put through the military and the discipline of life and pay respect to this country through that sort of training and that mindset."

Richmond suffered a 55-point hammering at the hands of Melbourne last week but welcome back Ben Cousins and Luke McGuane from suspension and captain Chris Newman and Nathan Foley from injury.

Speedster Robin Nahas was also included, with Daniel Jackson (leg) and Tom Hislop (leg) forced out and Jayden Post, Mitch Morton and Matt White dropped.

Fremantle's 2008 Rising Star winner Rhys Palmer will have to wait at least another week before making his AFL comeback, with debutant Nat Fyfe chosen to replace the injured Des Headland (knee).

"I didn't really expect it," said Fyfe, a speedy forward selected with pick No.20 in last year's national draft.

"I'm excited and nervous about what's to come.

"I'm getting my head around knowing my role for the game and exactly what I have to do for the team.

"There's a lot of history with the Anzacs so playing on this day is something I regard very highly.

"It's going to be a very special moment on a very special day."
